An Overview of Fundraising — Where to Raise Your Money
There are several ways to raise money — own funds, debt, equity, grants — each with a distinct cost and risk profile. Choosing wisely depends on your stage and what you are willing to give up.
Four Main Sources
- Own funds: no repayment, no stake given up, but limited in size
- Debt: must be repaid with interest; business freedom largely retained
- Equity: no repayment obligation, but investors receive a stake
- Grants: non-repayable public funds; typically stage- or purpose-restricted
Key Comparison Axes
- Repayable vs. non-repayable
- Stake given up vs. not
- Interest rate and expected investor return (cost of capital)
- Degree of operational freedom retained
Cost of Capital
- For debt: cost = interest rate paid to lender
- For equity: cost = return investors expect on their stake
- Higher risk perceived → higher cost demanded by providers
Order & Stage Logic
- Early stage (little track record): own funds, start-up loans, grants are central
- Equity becomes viable once business prospects are clearer
- Match the source to the stage and purpose
→ Pick the funding source that fits your stage — equity only once prospects are proven; lean on loans and grants while the track record is thin.
