Adaptive Expertise
Hatano & Inagaki (1986) identified two kinds of expert. Routine experts solve familiar problems fast; adaptive experts extend their skills to novel situations. The deciding factor is not volume of experience but a persistent habit of asking "why?"
Two Types of Expert
- Routine expertise: fast, accurate execution on familiar problem patterns.
- Adaptive expertise: applying existing knowledge to new, unfamiliar situations.
- The gap is not hours logged — it is the quality of reflection during learning.
What Creates the Difference
- Prioritising speed and volume → routine expert.
- Prioritising understanding and reflection → adaptive expert.
- Continuously asking "why is this so?" is the key habit to cultivate.
Why It Matters in a Startup
- Markets, customers, and technology all shift — routine solutions go stale in ~6 months.
- Adaptive experts can reframe and transfer knowledge when the ground changes.
- Routine expertise optimises for today; adaptive expertise compounds over time.
Hatano & Inagaki(1986)
