Procedural and Conditional Knowledge
Learning theory divides knowledge into three kinds: declarative (what), procedural (how), and conditional (when and why). What separates the skilled from the novice is an accumulation of conditional knowledge — gained only through experience and reflection.
Three Kinds of Knowledge
- Declarative: facts and concepts — the "what" (e.g., what git stash does)
- Procedural: step-by-step execution — the "how" (e.g., the exact command to type)
- Conditional: judgment about context — the "when and why" to apply a technique
Why Conditional Knowledge Is Rare
- Textbooks typically cover only declarative and procedural knowledge
- Conditional knowledge accumulates through real experience and deliberate reflection
- It is what distinguishes expert practitioners from book-trained beginners
Related Framings
- Explicit vs. tacit knowledge (Polanyi, 1966) — some knowledge resists verbal expression
- Strategic knowledge — knowing which strategy to deploy in a given situation
- Organisational knowledge creation (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995) extends the explicit/tacit pair
→ Conditional knowledge — knowing when and why — is the gap textbooks cannot close; only deliberate practice does.
