The money words in a startup plan
A working glossary for reading a startup / financing plan — the exact terms that appear on a P&L, a funding table, a loan sheet, and a cash-flow schedule. Grouped by where they show up, each defined so a first-time reader (or a loan officer) understands it in one pass.
Profit calc (P&L / 損益)
- Sales / revenue (売上高) = total money from selling goods or services.
- Cost of sales (売上原価) = costs directly tied to what you sold (e.g. AI usage fees + outsourcing to produce the articles).
- Gross profit (売上総利益/粗利) = sales − cost of sales — the rough profit.
- SG&A (販管費) = all costs to run the company (salary, rent, ads, comms) except cost of sales.
- Operating profit (営業利益) = gross profit − SG&A — what the core business finally keeps; negative here = the core business loses money.
- Depreciation (減価償却費) = spreading the cost of expensive equipment (a PC) over its useful years, expensed a little each year instead of all at once.
Funds / capital (資金)
- Capex funds (設備資金) = money to buy tangible things (machines, PCs).
- Working capital (運転資金) = money to run daily operations (supplies, rent, salaries).
- Own funds (自己資金) = money the company / owner puts up themselves.
- Paid-in capital (資本金) = capital invested at company formation.
- Director's loan (役員借入金) = money the representative personally lends the company — debt to the company, but from an insider, not an outside lender.
- Borrowings (借入金) = money borrowed from an outside lender such as a bank.
Financing / loans (融資)
- Grace period (据置期間) = a period after borrowing where principal repayment is deferred; you pay interest only during it.
- Principal / interest (元金/利息) = principal = the borrowed amount itself; interest = the fee for borrowing (e.g. 0.2%/yr).
- Credit Guarantee Corporation (信用保証協会) = a public body that guarantees repayment if you default, making banks more willing to lend.
- Brokered loan (あっせん融資) = an institutional-loan scheme where the ward (e.g. Minato) brokers 'please lend to this company' to a financial institution.
Cash flow (資金繰り) & business model
- Cash-flow schedule (資金繰り表) = month-by-month table of cash in and out, to check you never run out of cash.
- Month-end cash (月末現預金) = cash + deposits left at month-end; if this goes negative you have a cash shortfall (bankruptcy risk).
- Receivables / payables (売掛金/買掛金) = receivable = sold but not yet collected; payable = bought but not yet paid.
- Subscription (サブスク) = a recurring fixed monthly charge.
- Gross margin rate (粗利率) = gross profit ÷ sales; higher = more efficient.
- Unit economics (ユニットエコノミクス) = the profitability of one customer (how much one deal earns).
