The basics of taxonomy — how the map of knowledge has been drawn
Taxonomy (Greek: taxis + nomos) is not just library shelf-sorting — it is a philosophical answer to how humanity's knowledge should be carved up. Today the field is unified under the term Knowledge Organization System (KOS).
Two structural axes
- Enumerative: all categories listed in advance (DDC, LCC, NDC). Easy to use, hard to extend.
- Analytico-synthetic / faceted: decomposes a subject into facets (place, era, form) and builds up a code (UDC, Colon Classification).
- Faceted is more expressive; enumerative is more approachable. A personal notes system sits somewhere between the two.
Five major systems at a glance
- DDC (1876): 10 top-level classes, used in 200,000 libraries worldwide. Rigid for new fields like AI.
- LCC (1897): 21 alphabetic classes, practical over theoretical, aimed at academic collections.
- UDC (1905): facets DDC, allows combinatorial codes with +, :, / — the most expressive system.
- NDC (1929): DDC-derived, used by 99% of Japanese libraries; prioritises Japanese history.
- Bloom's Taxonomy (1956): classifies cognitive levels (Remember→Create), not subjects.
Notable extras
- OECD FOS: 6 broad academic fields used in paper statistics and admin.
- Wikipedia category: directed graph (multiple parents allowed, cycles forbidden), not a pure tree.
- Folksonomy (Vander Wal, 2004): bottom-up tag clouds with no hierarchy.
Three design lessons for any personal knowledge base
- Keep top-level entries ≤ 10 — DDC/UDC/NDC all converge there; beyond 10 strains working memory.
- Separate facets (subject × time × place × form) to cut tag duplication.
- Hierarchy + folksonomy are complementary: stable skeleton + living tags. Pure hierarchy is outdated; pure folksonomy breaks search.
→ No single system is correct — the realistic solution is a hybrid: a stable enumerated hierarchy as skeleton, and free tags as living flesh.

- UDC(1905年):DDCをファセット化。
